Blue Ribbon Award

Gifted and Talented

At Werner, the needs of gifted learners are met in many ways.

  • Pull-out enrichment class in math and reading, depending on area(s) of ID
  • Social/emotional groups based on needs of students
  • Classroom differentiation
  • Before and after school enrichment opportunities

Programming opportunities for GT students

Students who are identified in reading will receive a weekly pull-out enrichment class taught by the gifted teacher using gifted language arts curriculum, word morphology lessons, and novel studies.

Students who are identified in math will receive a weekly pull-out enrichment class taught by the gifted teacher where they will be allowed deeper exploration in math concepts, as well as an opportunity to participate in Math Olympiad in 4th and 5th grades.

Enrichment opportunities for GT students before or after school

In a typical year, Werner offers many before/after school enrichment opportunities: chess, Odyssey of the Mind, Choir, foreign language opportunities, running club, and more.

Affective programming for GT students

The social and emotional needs of the gifted students are addressed by the classroom teacher and gifted teacher within their learning environments. The school counselor is available to address specific needs and teaches whole-group lessons within homerooms. All gifted students have an affective goal, and they meet
with the gifted teacher to work towards those goals throughout the school year.

Grade-specific GT services

  • Grades 3-5: pull-out enrichment groups
  • Grades K-5: classroom differentiation
