History
Werner opened in 1987 and was named after Gail Werner, long-time PSD teacher and principal. The school’s unique design won national awards and served as the model for several other PSD elementary schools.
Learning culture
Lifelong learning is enhanced through a developmentally based academic program. The Werner community is dedicated to the social, emotional, physical, and academic growth of children. Werner’s character education program and Positive Behavior Support system assists students in following the ROAR Code: Respect, Own your behavior, Attitude that is positive, and Responsibility. Werner encourages school pride and positive behaviors, and attitudes.
Academic environment
In 2008, Werner received the prestigious Blue Ribbon Award from the U. S. Department of Education. Since 2002 we’ve been recognized as a John Irwin School of Excellence by the Colorado Department of Education and/or Governor's Distinguished Improvement Award.
We offer a challenging curriculum with a literacy-based program for reading and writing, and an integrated curriculum emphasizing research and critical thinking.
Werner’s gifted education program enhances students’ learning and promotes higher-level thinking skills. Our integrated services program assists students in meeting their learning potential. Werner offers both full and half-day kindergarten options.
Instructional & enrichment programs
Our Language Workshop provides literacy support for students in the primary grades. The school-wide Accelerated Reader computer program offers students the opportunity to earn points and recognition for their reading. Students have a variety of enrichment opportunities, including: choir, intramurals, student council, chess club, Junior Great Books, Lego Robotics, Spanish club, French Club and yearly science fair.
Opportunities for parents
Parents support Werner’s mission through parent organizations and many hours of volunteering in the classrooms, Media Center, school-wide events, enrichment activities, fundraising, producing the school directory, newsletter, and yearbook.
